Nederland ISD bond vote divides voters

According to a social media post on the 'All Things Nederland' Facebook page, a Nederland homeowner's vote "no" sign was taken from his front yard over the weekend.

NEDERLAND, Texas — Less than a month away from the may school bond vote, Nederland voters are more anxious than ever.

Erica Mitchell says it's causing some voters to act in ways that don't represent the city.

"The way I see some people talking to each other and about each other especially on social media," said Mitchell.

Mitchell will vote 'yes' on the bond this May. Based on the rhetoric Mitchell has seen on social media, she believes the bond issue has divided the community.

"I think they are not representing themselves well," said Mitchell.

According to a social media post on the 'All Things Nederland' Facebook page, a Nederland homeowner's vote "no" sign was taken from his front yard over the weekend.

"I think that is crazy," said Mitchell.

More than 83 million dollars from the bond would go to a new high school and almost 50 million would go to improvements to the elementary school and adding new technology, while more than 11 million dollars would go to renovating the middle school.

The rest would go to upgrading the stadium and improving safety and security at the district.

"The bond is going to raise everyone's taxes, including my kids' and grandchildren's," said Wendell Mosely.

Wendell will vote "no" this coming election.

He understands why both sides can be a little emotional about the bond issue, considering it deals with tax dollars and the future of the city's children.

"We do need to stop spending so much," said Mitchell.

Voters will have the final say at the ballot box on May 4th. Early voting begins April 22.
