Vidor ISD implementing new program so all students can eat for free

It's a federal program the school district qualifies for because majority of the student body is in need due to the storm.

VIDOR — The Vidor Independent School District is looking to lessen the load of families affected by Harvey.

All students within the district will now be able to get their breakfast and lunch completely free.

It's a federal program the school district qualifies for because majority of the student body is in need due to the storm.

The Community Eligibility Program allows the nation's highest poverty districts and schools to serve all students free breakfast and lunch daily.

The district has decided that this will be helpful for their community.

One student will save an average of $565 a year, which will add up to an average of $2,250 over four years.

A parent at the district says she expects to save a lot of money from the program.

"This is going to be great because there is not many students or family's who have not been affected by the storm," said Mandi Downs, a 5th and 6th grade Life Skills teacher.

Two charter schools and eight other Southeast Texas districts have also participated in the program.
