Southeast Texas Food Bank to hold 'FarmFest,' provide produce, milk at no cost to public

Produce, milk, educational opportunities and chances to win prizes, including a $500 gift card to HEB, is available to those who park and experience the vendor displays.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Southeast Texas Food Bank is hosting 'FarmFest' on Saturday with the help of Lamar University Big Event volunteers to distribute produce and milk at no cost to the public. 

The event will be held on April 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3845 S. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway. The produce and milk will be available as long as supplies lasts, and nutrition education opportunities will also be provided. 

Local members of the farming community to help highlight the 'impact farming provides to the food chain' according to the a Southeast Texas Food Bank news release. 

'The distribution of commodities will be on a drive through first come, first served basis beginning at 11 a.m. and the commodities, educational opportunities and chances to win prizes, including a $500 gift card to HEB, will be available to those who park and experience the vendor displays at the event,' according to the release.

“An emphasis of food banks is to be a channel of fresh and healthy foods to the communities they serve,” said Dan Maher, Executive Director of the Southeast Texas Food Bank in the release. “We have been fortunate enough to be able to load up with an extra inventory of produce for the FarmFest event, and it coincides with a shipment of milk received from the USDA, which is a rare commodity for us to have on hand."

In conjunction with Lamar University’s Big Event deploying volunteers throughout the community, the Southeast Texas Food Bank will host an event known as FarmFest this Saturday, Apr. 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3845 S. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway. The event will feature a large produce and milk distribution at no cost to the public, as long as supplies last, as well as nutrition education opportunities and engagement with local members of the farming community to help highlight the powerful impact farming provides to the food chain.

“An emphasis of food banks is to be a channel of fresh and healthy foods to the communities they serve,” said Dan Maher, Executive Director of the Southeast Texas Food Bank. “We have been fortunate enough to be able to load up with an extra inventory of produce for the FarmFest event, and it coincides with a shipment of milk received from the USDA, which is a rare commodity for us to have on hand. We are grateful for the special assistance we will receive from Lamar in making this activity possible. We hope it will not only be an occasion to share healthy food with those who are able to attend, but a real chance to remind people how vital farming is to our economy and culture, too.”
