Silsbee Middle student knocked out, couldn't move from the waist down after school fight

Student's mother is now fighting for the school to take action

SILSBEE, Texas — Danielle Bullock still gets emotional when she thinks about the phone call she received from her son's school on October 9.

The voice on the other end of the phone told her that her 12 year old son had been hurt. She was urged to get to Edwards-Johnson Memorial Silsbee Middle school right away.

Bullock says when she got to the school, her son was laying on the gym floor.

"He didn't say anything," Bullock recalls. "He was just lying there, crying. He couldn't move from the waist down."

Bullock's son was sent to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston via Airlife.

The good news, the boy regained feeling and function to his lower body, and he was discharged from the hospital that night.

"He's still having issues. He doesn't move around as much as he did," Bullock told 12News.

Bullock's son says that he and another student got into a fight over a ball in gym class.

After 12News started asking the school district questions about the incident, Bullock was shown video of what happened.

She told us that you can see a student taking the ball her son had and shoving him to the ground. Once he gets back up, he's elbowed in the jaw and knocked out.

Bullock's son and the other student involved are each facing a one day lunch detention. She says the school told her that her son is being disciplined because he "was in the scuffle".

Bullock wants the school to do more, and she feels the school should separate the two boys from having classes together.

She told 12News that she does not feel safe sending her son to school.

Silsbee ISD told 12News in a statement: "The district cannot comment on any incidents being investigated within the district that involve students or staff."

In a Facebook post sent out on the day of the incident, Silsbee ISD said: "Due to an unforeseen injury at Edwards-Johnson Memorial Silsbee Middle School during the school day, a student was transported to a hospital via Airlife Medical Helicopter. The parents of the child were notified immediately. After the arrival of EMS, it was the decision of EMT’s to call for Airlife to transport the injured child. Silsbee ISD ensures the safety of its students and staff, and takes all matters seriously. It should be noted that parents/guardians will be notified immediately, first and foremost, in any serious event."
