Patriots linebacker returns to Southeast Texas to host 5k in hometown

Former Memorial Titan, and current New England Patriots linebacker, Elandon Roberts hold second annual Heart Walk in Port Arthur.

PORT ARTHUR — Southeast Texas has been a breeding ground for professional athletes for decades. From Bubba Smith and Jay Bruce in Beaumont to Jamal Charles and Stephen Jackson in Port Arthur and many more in-between, pro athletes just seem to spring up from the area.

Elandon Roberts, the latest southeast Texan to find success in the pros, has been back in his hometown of Port Arthur for a few days, but held his second-annual Heart Walk today at his old high school.

The former Memorial Titan, Houston Cougar, and now Super Bowl champion New England Patriots linebacker held a 5k to benefit those suffering from heart disease.

This is a cause that is close to Roberts' after his aunt passed away from heart disease when she was only 43.

"I just always wanted to come back to the community and put a good outlook on the community, and do whatever I needed to do for the community," Roberts said.

He said last year they only had 110 people walk, but that it was pouring rain on that day.

This year the walk had 398 people walk and 425 people registered.

In addition to the walk people were able to get free heart screenings at the event.
