'I feel like I'm fifty': Port Arthur woman turns 100

Port Arthur Mayor Derrick Freeman signed a proclamation declaring today as Mrs. Bessie Roberts day across the city.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — A Port Arthur woman celebrated her 100th birthday last month, and attended her party on Sunday at Barnes Memorial United Methodist Church in Port Arthur.

Bessie Roberts spent the evening surrounded by family and friends. She has lived in Port Arthur since 1935. Her 100th birthday was May 30.

"I feel like I'm fifty," she said. "I feel good."

She is also a founding member of her church, which is where she discovered her love for Christ and others, she said.

"I love people. Really, I love people. Anybody can be my friend as long as they not cussing me out," Roberts said.

Melba Wilson has known Roberts since she was kid. She said there was no way she would miss this celebration.

"She's always told me to treat everybody right is her secret. You know, not how they treat you but treat them how you know to treat them," Wilson said. "I happen to know that Jesus is her secret that she has passed onto me."

Roberts said she lives her life by the golden rule, treat others the way you want to be treated.

"I love people and I don't mind doing favors for people," Roberts said.
