Highway 87 closed for hours following fatal crash in Galveston County

The highway was closed for several hours on Monday while the scene was investigated.

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas — Highway 87 is back open as of about 9:30 p.m. after hours of being shut down near Highway 124 in Galveston County.

One person died due to a crash in Galveston County on Highway 87. The Department of Public Safety went to the scene and is investigated the crash near Bolivar Peninsula.

The accident, which happened on Monday afternoon, happened near Highway 124.

The driver of the vehicle hit a construction vehicle according to officials. The driver was traveling westbound on Highway 87 when the crash happened.

“I think it’s sad there was a fatal and give my thoughts to the family,” Kimberly Hensley, a Crystal Beach resident said. She decided to take another route to pass the scene. She was trying to get to Beaumont.

“I was very upset,” Hensley said. “There’s no other way to leave the peninsula other than that road.”

Hensley says with all the construction going on, the highway isn’t the safest of roads to drive on.

Since last year, TxDot has been working on elevating Highway 87.

Officials originally said the highway could remain closed for up to seven hours because of the crash.
