CAUGHT IN THE ACT: Nederland Police pull over drivers to give them cash

Instead of being pulled over for traffic violations, they were each pulled over for practicing safe driving.

NEDERLAND — We all know crime doesn't pay, but Wednesday in Nederland safe driving did. Sydnie Leonard, Sabrina Braneff and Sandy Carbaugh were all pulled over by officer Tanner Thompson. Naturally, they were worried when they saw the flashing lights pull up behind them.

"I thought I was going to get a ticket, for nothing, even though I wasn't doing anything" said Leonard.

"I was trying to figure out what I'd done wrong," said Braneff.

"I was like oh no, what did I do, I didn't think I was speeding," said Carbaugh.

They were right to be confused. Instead of being pulled over for traffic violations, they were each pulled over for practicing safe driving.

18-year-old Leonard just recently got her car, and has already had one speeding ticket. One was enough. Since then, she's been careful.

"I was really hoping I wasn't getting it cause my car would have been gone, I was freaking out so I'm glad it didn't happen," said Leonard.

Officer Thompson said he's used to handing out tickets when necessary, but today he got to hand out cash instead. An anonymous citizen donated $600 for the officers to hand out as a reward.

"They just have this shocked look on their face because nobody ever gets pulled over for driving safely, so it's definitely nice to see that kind of reaction," said Thompson.

A nice change for the officers, and the ones rewarded with an extra $50 to spend this holiday season.

"That's going to help me out with my Christmas shopping for sure," said Leonard.

"I'll probably use it for Christmas on the kids," said Braneff.

An unexpected surprise for the three of them, and an encounter with the cops they'll never forget.
