Bruce Thompson, co-founder of Market Basket grocery chain dies at 92

Thompson opened his first grocery store in the area in Groves in 1962.

BEAUMONT, Texas — One of the founders of the Southeast Texas grocery store chain, Market Basket, has died.

Bruce Thompson, the co-founder of the Market Basket chain of grocery stores, died on Saturday according to Levingston Funeral home.

He was 92 years-old.

Thompson opened his first grocery store in the area in Groves in 1962 according to the Market Basket website at MarketBasketFoods.com.

Later Thompson partnered with Ed Hughes, who owned a store in Nederland, and the two began opening grocery stores together according to the site.

Currently the Market Basket chain, which is still privately owned by the Thompson and Franz families, consists of 31 stores in Southeast Texas and Louisiana according to the site.

A reception for family and friends will be held from 5 – 6:30 p.m. Friday evening at United Methodist Church in Port Neches according to the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Temple in Port Arthur at 4101 Texas Highway 73.
