Bridge City ditch dispute intensifies, mother starts petition

One resident said last Saturday's heavy rain brought water up to her driveway. She said the problem has been going on since Hurricane Ike and has had to change her sewage system twice.

ORANGE COUNTY, Texas — One mother blames the Orange County Drainage District for not cleaning the ditch behind her house.

Mosley created a petition Thursday to force workers to clean up the drainage ditch that intersects Roberts Avenue near Blueberry Street.

In January, Mosley said a city worker and the manager for the Orange County Drainage District came out to look at the situation next to her home.

"They had a map and they both agreed that my drainage was actually Orange County Drainage," said Mosley.

According to Don Carona, the General Manager at the Orange County Drainage District, the drainage ditch next to Mosley's home sits within the city.

He said it's not maintained by his agency, but has offered to help Bridge City if the city receives the proper permissions from nearby land owners.

"Every time it rains that ditch over flows into my pastures and into my yard," said Beatrice Nugier.

Nugier said last Saturday's heavy rain brought water up to her driveway. She said the problem has been going on since Hurricane Ike and has had to change her sewage system twice.

Carona said several obstacles have delayed the city from starting the project. He blames utility poles, fences and trees along the ditch, and a lack of plotted easements.

Carona said the city has obtained several of the required landowner permissions necessary for the project to begin.
