Boy with autism gets to keep therapy ducks

Dylan's parent's say the ducks help their son remain calm and are an important part of his daily routine.

GEORGETOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. - It was a happy ending Wednesday night for a boy with autism in Ottawa County.

Dylan Dyke, 12, will be able to keep his two therapy ducks, Nibbles and Bill -- this after a three hour meeting Wednesday, Aug. 22 with leaders in Georgetown Township.

Neighbors complained that the ducks smell, get into other people's yards and produce a lot of waste.

But ultimately township leaders will allow Dylan to keep the ducks with a number of restrictions. The area must be kept clean, not smell and the ducks cannot stray into other yards.

Dylan's parent's say the ducks help their son remain calm and are an important part of his daily routine.

"We are very thankful of all the supporters that came out, not only in this community but nationwide and around the world. Messages from Australia, Europe, Japan, China.....people have really reached out and offered their support to us and we really appreciate it," said Mark Dyke.

Another meeting will he held to finalize and review the duck restrictions in September.
