Beaumont man explains 'street craps' in wake of deadly Beaumont dice game

BEAUMONT — After a shooting dice game turns violent leaving one man dead in Beaumont, 12News digs deeper in what "street craps" is.

This dice game is normally played without a craps table.

The name comes from the way the game was played in the late 1900's, on city streets and sidewalks.

"Youngsters get down on the street to shoot dice," says Lonnie Carter, who see's shooting dice regularly.

He says although he doesn't play it, being around people who do is a learning experience.

"People go out, drink alcohol and shoot dice for money," he says.

"By watching, that's how you learn," Carter explains.

Despite it being illegal when playing with money, here's how the game is played.

People first place their monetary bets, if you land a 7 or 11 on the first roll, you automatically win.

If you roll double ace and double six, or craps on your first roll, you lose your money.

If you roll anything else, you continue to roll until you land the same number.

If you roll a seven, that's when your money gets taken away.

"Don't get mad because someone won your money," Carter says.

Around the dice rollers can also be side bets, and losing money, plus substance abuse, Carter says that's when things get pretty serious.

"You don't have to fight for anything like that," Carter says.

"You can play dice if you have common since," he says.

Gambling of course is prohibited in the state of Texas, but its also unlawful to win or lose money or anything of value in a game of chance.

Problem is that it's difficult to prove gambling and usually it only results in a fine.
