Beaumont ISD continues talks of possibly changing name of “Butch” Thomas Center

The Beaumont ISD Board of Managers returned to talks about potentially changing the name of the Carrol "Butch" Thomas educational support center.

BEAUMONT — BISD Superintendent Dr. John Frossard laid out the possible criteria for a name change.

There is still strong support for and against changing the name of the stadium.

He offered ideas to honor Beaumont's football history. Dr. Frossard suggested adding a wall of honor for some former coaches, board members or other influential community leaders.

One Beaumont ISD board member says he would give limited support to a name change.

Beaumont’s NAACP president Brenda Spivey says the presentation was nice, but she would prefer the name remain the same.

"We just had a done deal with Beaumont United. We want the community to come before you, unite, be organized and help our kids get a great education. I want that too,” Spivey said.

“So I would beseech each of you to consider our choice. Leave the name alone, leave the name the same," Spivey added.

Spivey has told 12News in the past that the proposed name change is a race issue, and she maintained that position.

Templeton says that he also wants to listen to what the other board members think before a final decision is made.

Dr. Frossard reiterated his position that any change reflects a consensus of opinion from all area racial and ethnic groups.

Templeton feels with the interest so high in making the name change, a decision could be reached quickly.
