BEAUMONT — The Brentwood Country Club of Texas has announced the opening of a new 18 hole golf course in Beaumont called The Woods.
The Woods Golf & Hunt Club, formerly know as Iron Oaks, is located off Major and opened it's doors on Saturday, September 1, 2018.
Iron Oaks, which had been open since 1995, closed its course just months prior and after the Tropical Storm Harvey many courses that made it though were hard to find.
"You hate to see a golf course go down because we have only so much around here," said Lonnie Labove, a Port Neches resident. "It's good we have another one opened here."
National numbers show that golf courses around the country have been shutting down. However, a spokesperson for the club says that a lack of golf courses in the area has helped triple their business.
According to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, millennial's have a lack of interest in playing the game.
"Kids don't really play, they don't get introduced to the game until their well into their 20's and 30's," Labove said. "Older people like to play the game."
"In fact the National Golf Foundation released a study back in 2013 that said there were 400,000 fewer golfers in that year, with 200,000 of the decline coming from Millennials.
Despite more than 800 golf courses going away across the U.S. in the past decade, a spokesperson for the new course says they expect to get a lot of business.
The Woods Golf & Hunt Club will be open for residents every Friday through Monday.
