NEW ORLEANS — Ed. Note: The Louisiana Department of Health reported an incomplete update on May 29, citing network issues. This story will be updated when new data is reported.

The Louisiana Department of Health has reported 2,661 deaths and 38,802 positive cases of COVID-19, the potentially deadly respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus.

28,700 people in the state have presumptively recovered from the disease. 

A person is presumed recovered if it has been more than 14 days since they have tested positive and is not currently in the hospital, or it has been 21 days since testing positive and has not died. 

LDH said the figure of presumed recovered will be updated weekly. 

Reported cases have ranged from mild illness (similar to a common cold) to severe pneumonia that requires hospitalization. So far, deaths have been reported worldwide mainly in older adults who had other health conditions.
