Beaumont city venues to remain closed after 4-3 council vote

The facilities were set to reopen on August 1.

BEAUMONT, Texas — City venues in Beaumont will stay closed after council members voted 4-3 Tuesday to keep the facilities shuttered due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The council previously decided to reopen venues like the Beaumont Event Centre and the Jefferson Theatre on August 1.

On Tuesday, the council voted to keep all city venues closed until further notice due to concerns about the spread of the coronavirus.

For more than 2 hours, council members went back and forth discussing the pros and cons of reopening the facilities.

Health experts voiced their concerns to city council, saying opening venues could lead to a surge in COVID-19 cases.

No reopening date has been set.
