Groundbreaking for multi-billion dollar ethane export project held in Beaumont

BEAUMONT, Texas — A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the multi-billion dollar ethane export project to be built over the next three years in Beaumont. 

American Ethane and Martin Midstream will be building a portion of an ethane export project at its Martin Midstream facility in Beaumont company spokesman John Houghtaling told 12News on Friday.

The terminal is expected to bring 5,000 construction and production jobs throughout the U.S. according to an American Ethane and Martin Midstream news release. The project will bring $8 billion in U.S. infrastructure, and will triple U.S. ethane production according to the release. It is set to cost $1.5 billion.

The pipeline will run from Mont Belvieu to Beaumont, and will export ethane to China. It will have a total capacity of 10 million metric tons per year according to American Ethane.

This project was part of the U.S./China Beijing Summit, signed at a press conference before President Trump and President Xi Jinping in November 2017 according to the release.

The groundbreaking was held at 1 Gulf States Road in Beaumont.
