PORT ARTHUR, Texas — Investigators say gun violence claimed two lives and injured three others over the course of one weekend in Port Arthur.
Jasmine Newman, 22, was an innocent bystander outside a house on Vicksburg with a group of friends when a gunman opened fire.
Her death has some neighbors concerned about their safety
"Where are you safe? You not safe in the house, you not safe out the house," Della Johnson said. "It has to be a limitation with these guns, something needs to be done, with these guns."
The other victim was shot at Avery Trace apartments on Highway 365. Police have yet to determine a motive.
The weekend shootings come at a time when Port Arthur Police are adding new officers to the force. LaTavia Joseph is looking to do her part in fighting crime.
She says the rise in crime is what attracted her to work in Port Arthur.
"I'm looking to get in and get dirty and learn a lot. The only way to learn is to deal with a area that, like you said, has things going on often, it attracted me to it because of the crime rate," Joseph said.
As of now police have not made any arrest in connection to any of the homicides, if you know anything you're encouraged to contact police or Southeast Texas crime stoppers.
"There is a group of individuals in this city that are responsible for it and our job and our goal in this police department is to bring those people to justice," Port Arthur Detective Mike Hebert said.
