Sheriff's office SWAT team takes man into custody after standoff at Port Neches home

Several blocks around the home were blocked off and a nearby school was put on lockdown during the standoff.

PORT NECHES, Texas — An armed man who barricaded himself into a Port Neches home was safely taken into custody.

Deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office warrant division were attempting to serve a warrant in the 2700 block of Merriman Street Tuesday afternoon when the man barricaded himself inside a home with at least one gun according to the sheriff's office.

A Port Neches elementary school a few blocks away was put on lockdown as a precaution while police and deputies dealt with the man.

After being unable to make contact with the man deputies moved closer in an armored vehicle and attempted to contact the man via loud speaker.

Later they were able to take him into custody peacefully according to the sheriff's office.

Several blocks around the home were blocked off while deputies attempted to negotiate with the man and get him to surrender to deputies.

Ridgewood Elementary School, which is about a block away, was on lockdown as a precaution according to the Port Neches-Groves Independent School District.

Parents were contacted by the school and student were released early to their parents according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies are also alerted residents in nearby homes to get them to safety a sheriff's office spokesperson said.
