PORT ARTHUR, Texas — A Port Arthur family is grieving the loss of its daughter Monday instead of celebrating her birthday.
Police say Jasmine Newman, a mother of two, was gunned down in the 1100 block of Vicksburg in Port Arthur on Sunday.
Kevin Newman, Jasmine's uncle, spoke to 12News on Monday.
"It's senseless, it was just something that shouldn't have happened," he said.
Jermel Newman, Jasmine's mother, said the loss is a difficult one.
Police are calling her death a 'cowardly act of violence,' saying Newman was an innocent bystander.
She was shot while standing outside a house, while talking to friends.
She was 22 years old.
"It's a loss and it hurts. This was my sister's only child and left two other innocent babies behind," Kevin Newman said. "It really hurts when a two-year-old asks where's her mother, and you just don't have the answer for it."
Jasmine would've turned 23 on Monday. She went out Saturday night with friends to celebrate. Her mother could hardly find the words to describe what she's going through.
"All I want them to do is turn themselves in because justice has to be done," she said. "Because I'm hurting and that's my only baby and they didn't have to do that, they didn't have to do her like that because she didn't mess with anybody, nobody at all."
The family says Jasmine was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.
"It's just as much murder here as it is in Houston. People should really worry about that, today it's my niece tomorrow it could be yours," Kevin Newman said.
