Newton County deputies: Hog hunters discover dead man's body in creek

The person’s name will not be released until family has been notified.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Deputies are gathering information regarding a dead man's body found near an abandoned vehicle.

Newton County Sheriffs found an abandoned vehicle on Highway 87 southbound in the Devils Pocket area on March 27, 2020.

The sheriff’s office said they contacted the owner and later released the vehicle. 

The Newton County Sheriffs received a report of a missing man last seen in Cameron, Louisiana. Deputies said they spent time looking for him.

The Sheriff's office received a call from hog hunters on Saturday, April 4 around 12:15 a.m. The hunters said they saw a body in a creek approximately 0.5 miles east from where the vehicle was previously found. 

The Dewyville Fire Department and Newton County Sheriffs carried the body to Highway 87.

An inquest was done by Justice of the Peace Dana Ashmore, and the body was transported  to the Jefferson County morgue for an autopsy.

The person’s name will not be released until family has been notified.
