The project began back in October 2018 and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2019 according to a news release from the Lamar University athletics department.

Hellas Construction, headquartered in Austin, was chosen to install the field as they have for the school's football field at Provost Umphrey Stadium in 2010 according to the release.

"We are excited to be working with such a reputable company as Hellas. Their list of clients and the reviews from those clients is very exciting, and their proximity to us in Houston should provide a great working relationship," head coach Will Davis was quoted as saying in the  release.

The new turf should provide a "truer bounce of the baseball" for players in the infield while the turf in the outfield is designed for more consistent bounces from the ball the release said.

The design of the new field will also reduce maintenance and rain outs and save the university money in the long-run the release said.

The Cardinals begin their 2019 season on February 15, 2019. and will host 28 games this season on the new field.
