Organizations commemorate fallen veterans ahead of Memorial Day.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Texas — Every Memorial Day weekend for 15 years, Cheryl Williams said she has paid her respects to fallen veterans.

She is a member of the Dorie E. Miller Post 817 of the American Legion.

" As a veteran, one of the most highest levels of sacrifice we can ever give is with our lives, whether you die in combat or years or you die years after you've been discharged," Williams said.

Each year, they place flags on their graves. They went to cemeteries on Gill and Pine Streets in Beaumont Saturday, May 25.

"I think for every veteran in the United States of America, it's very critical that we memorialize them and that we pay tribute," Williams said.

The ROTC from Beaumont United High School and the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association joined. The members of CVMA said this is their mission.

"This is why we join the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association, is to give back to the veterans who have paved the road for us coming through our military service as well as life after the service," Terry Vaughn said.

"The veterans have paid their dues in the community and throughout the world, and we just look forward to giving back to them even when they're not here with us," American Legion member Lee Smith said.

Williams said it's important for all of them to commemorate veterans, but more important to pass this down to generations to come.

"It's very important for us to be able to bridge the gap between them and us so that they understand the significance of being patriotic, understanding the significance of selfless service," she said.
