Ashly Elam is a sports director at KBMT 12News in Beaumont, Texas, specializing in anchoring and reporting sports.
Elam joined the 12News team most recently in February 2019 after spending more than a year and a half working for a Southeast Texas sports magazine and website.
He previously worked at 12News from 1999 through May 2017 and was also a sports anchor when he left.
Elam knew from an early age he wanted to be involved in professional sports either as a player or a journalist.
When asked for an elementary school project what he wanted to be when he grew up Elam replied that he wanted to “play for the Houston Astros or become a sports anchor.”
He was raised in Southeast Texas graduating from Port Neches-Groves High School and attending Lamar University where he studied communication.
Elam has covered sports in Southeast Texas since 1999 and his first stint at 12News began with an internship that turned into a full-time job when he was 19-years-old.
While working for 12News in the past Elam won many awards including the Southeast Texas Coaches Association Media Person of The Year, Port Arthur News' Best Sports Anchor and won Best Sportscast in the Press Club of Southeast Texas' annual contest.
Elam has covered the Super Bowl, the MLB Playoffs All-Star Game and spring training, the NBA All-Star Game and the NCAA Basketball and Baseball Tournaments while at 12News.
While he has always enjoyed cover professional sports Elam's true passion is covering Southeast Texas high school sports.
In 2018 Elam was named as the thirteenth member of the "Built Ford Tough Player of The Week advisory board." His duties on the board include voting for the Players of The Week for the entire state of Texas inclduing private schools and schools all the way up to Class 6A.
A few of Elam’s more unusual interests include uniforms, sports logos and flags.
