Lamar's Nick Garth named Southland Conference player of the week

It's the second time this season that Garth has been honored by the Southland office.

FRISCO, Texas – Lamar University junior guard Nick Garth has been named Southland Conference Player of the Week announce league officials Monday afternoon. It marks the second time this season that Garth has been honored by the Southland office – an award presented by Garth also received College Sports Madness Player of the Week honors Monday.

Garth helped the Cardinals lock up a spot in the Southland Conference Championships for the second consecutive season with road victories at Houston Baptist and Stephen F. Austin. The Cardinals (19-11/11-6 SLC) locked up their berth in the postseason tournament with a historic 14-point victory at Houston Baptist Wednesday. It marked the program’s first win over HBU in front of their home fans.

The Cardinals continued their climb up the Southland standings Saturday when they went on the road to hand Stephen F. Austin its first home loss of the season, 71-66. It marked the first time LU had defeated SFA in Nacogdoches since the 2005-06 season. It was also the team’s first season sweep of the Lumberjacks since 2001-02.

Garth came off the bench in both games to averaged 22.5 points per game. He scored 22 at HBU and netted 23 against the Lumberjacks. The school’s all-time leader in three-point field goals, Garth knocked down 10-of-19 (.526) attempts from three-point range in the two games.

Garth has reached the 20-point plateau seven times this season, including each of the team’s past three games, and has taken his play to another level over the course of the past five games. Garth is averaging better than 20 points per game over the course of the team’s past five games. He leads the team in scoring during Southland only contests averaging 15.2 points per game.

The Cardinals enter the final week of the regular season with only one game on the docket. Big Red will travel to rival McNeese (10-16/7-9 SLC) Saturday to take on the Cowboys. The game against the Cowboys will tip off at 3:30 p.m. from Burton Coliseum. LU is currently tied for fifth in the standings with New Orleans, and can climb as high as fourth in the standings before the Southland Conference tournament.
