J Russell is a Sports Anchor for 12 News. Originally from Phoenix, AZ, J always loved being in front of the camera. Yes, his first name is just the letter. J’s father named him after basketball great, Julius Erving A.K.A, “Dr. J”.
He attended Arizona State for two years, but once he was diagnosed with “Valley Fever”, he took a three-year break to recover. After J regained his strength, he decided to start his professional journey.
His career began in West Texas at KMID-TV as a reporter. Three months down the line, he was promoted to the Weekend Sports Anchor where he had the opportunity to cover the Permian Panthers, under the “Friday Night Lights” and Texas Tech.
After this two years in Midland, TX he accepted the Sports Director position in Lafayette, LA for the startup station KLAF/KADN.
During his time in Acadiana, J covered the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns, LSU, New Orleans Saints and the New Orleans Pelicans.
He was there when the ground shook at Death Valley for the Tigers and Alabama clashed in 2016. In 2017, he also covered the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history as the New England Patriots shocked the Atlanta Falcons.
The following month, J was in New Orleans interviewing the best players in the world at the NBA All-Star game.
His favorite sports teams include the Dallas Mavericks, Arizona Cardinals and of course the Sun Devils.
J is also a proud member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
