There are 150 temporary jobs available for residents in Orange, Hardin and Jefferson counties who lost their jobs after Harvey.
Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas received funding from the Texas Workforce Commission to make this possible.
Workforce Solutions Director of Operations, Lois Cornwell explains many of the jobs are related to Harvey recovery like maintenance, debris removal, and trash pick-up. There are also jobs in retail, at school districts and other businesses.
The jobs will last up to 6 months depending on the need for each business or government agency.
"It’s really a good program and helps the area get back on their feet," said Cornwell.
Cornwell said people can indicate their job preference but businesses will ultimately decide who they want to hire.
"We’ll talk to you about what your skill sets are and for example we will have a maintenance mechanic type of thing so the work site will need someone with that experience,” said Cornwell.
The program has about 10 residents temporarily employed with the program.
"I love everyone I work with I get along with everyone I work with it’s a good place to work," said worker Christy LaPoint.
LaPoint said she is happy to get back to work after being unemployed for several months. She has been searching for a job months before Harvey hit but had no luck. After meeting with Workforce Solutions she was able to get a job at Mission Attic in Groves.
"I was looking for work, I had interviews no one called me back, so the Workforce looked out for me," said LaPoint.
Residents can apply if they were laid off before Harvey for a few months or if they were laid off after Harvey.
