Harvey modifies events in Southeast Texas, cancels ACS annual Cattle Baron's Ball

American Cancer Society announcing the cancelation of the Cattle Baron's Ball. The Gift of Life cancelled their annual 5K run but will host Walk of Survivorship post Harvey.

BEAUMONT - The preparations have begun inside the office of the “Gift of Life.” Pink was seen everywhere for Saturday’s Walk of Survivorship, an expression of solidarity whether you are a Harvey or cancer survivor.

“Several people have been dedicated for several years and it just needed to go forward.” Said Joy Jacob.

The Gift of Life host their 5k Color Rush each year but Harvey made it challenging for the organization this time.

But the organization says they will not let the floods wash away the spirit of hundreds who support the cause.

“We are doing this in remembrance of those who have lost their loved ones but for also for those who survived this storm here in Southeast Texas.” Jacob said.

Unfortunately, The American Cancer Society had to cancel one of their largest fundraisers this year, the Southeast Texas Cattle Baron’s Ball. Also due to Harvey.

“We just felt that it was really important to not plan a major fundraiser during these times of recovery and rebuilding. It’s important to us that we are sensitive to the needs of the community as we go through this process.” Said Kathy Chessher with ACS.

The ball brought over $350,000 dollars last year. The funds are used for cancer research, wigs, and other efforts.

“What led us to the decision is people don’t have that expandable income because they are focused on rebuilding their homes and their lives.” Chessher said.

The American Cancer Society will host their annual “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K Walk” this year on October 21st at Lamar University Dauphin Athletic Complex.

Gift of Life Julie Richardson Procter “Walk of Survivorship” will take place Saturday on October 7th in Downtown Beaumont.
