BEAUMONT - Hurricane Harvey has canceled the American Cancer Society's largest annual fundraiser in Southeast Texas but the charity is still hoping to raise funds via a"virtual fundraiser."
Though no actual event will be held the ACS is hoping to raise funds for its hurricane relief fund according to a news release.
Funds collected will be used to help cancer patients who are having trouble getting care due to the aftermath of the storm according to the release.
Donations will be restricted to cancer patient support and will help evacuated patients find providers, temporary housing, and transportation including gas cards when traveling to appointments among other things the release said.
Funds will also be used to help connect displaced patients and providers as they move back home or into new homes.
From the American Cancer Society...
After careful consideration, the American Cancer Society (ACS) has cancelled the Southeast Texas Cattle Barons Ball, previously scheduled for Saturday, November 11, 2017, due to the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey in our community.
Manager, Kathy Chessher says, “As many of our supporters know, the American Cancer Society relies on the help of many talented and hard-working volunteers to coordinate an amazing event each year."
"This year, about 1/3 of our committee members were deeply affected by Hurricane Harvey. This, combined with the lasting effect on our community led us to this difficult decision."
"It was important to our organization to be sensitive to the needs of our region during this time of recovery. We look forward to coming back stronger than ever in 2018!”
ACS is hosting a virtual event in its place. A virtual event gives Cattle Baron’s Ball participants the opportunity to continue to support the American Cancer Society via the internet.
No actual event will be held but donors may give online in lieu of attending. All donations will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Hurricane Relief Fund.
Hurricane Harvey affected effected many of our friends, family and coworkers; this includes cancer patients.
The funds we collect through this effort will assist cancer patients who are having trouble accessing care due to the destruction and devastation of the hurricane.
Donations will go above normal operational efforts and will be restricted to cancer patient support.
Examples include helping evacuated patients find providers, temporary housing, and transportation including gas cards when traveling to appointments.
Additionally, these funds will be used to connect patients and providers during the rebuilding process, as displaced patients and providers start to settle in at their new locales, or move back home.
While we are grateful for the many organizations and individuals lending assistance on the ground, we know that no one can navigate the complex cancer arena like the American Cancer Society.
Rarely are we presented with such a critical need and one of such magnitude.
Impacted cancer patients are now saddled with the unfathomable burden of not only dealing with their diagnosis, but possibly having lost everything they have.
Now more than ever, the American Cancer Society needs your help.
