Driver, infant seriously injured when truck-tractor flips, ejects both near Hillister on U.S. 69

TYLER COUNTY - The driver of a truck-tractor and her 3-month-old grandchild were seriously injured after being ejected from the cab of a truck-tractor when it flipped Wednesday afternoon in Tyler County.

From the Texas Department of Public Safety...

At approximately 1:20p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to a one vehicle rollover crash on US 69 in Tyler County.  The crash occurred in the Hillister Community.

Preliminary reports indicate that a Freightliner truck tractor was traveling northbound on US 69.  Due to the inclement weather, the driver hydroplaned and lost control.  The vehicle rolled over several times before coming to rest.

The driver, 54-year-old Sherri Leach of Gatesville, Texas and her 3-month-old passenger were both ejected from the vehicle and transported by medical helicopter to St. Elizabeth hospital with serious injuries.

Leach and her 3-month-old grandchild have since been transferred to Hermann Memorial hospital in Houston.  Their medical conditions are unknown.

Initially, Leach stated that the child was her child, but Troopers believe that she may have been in shock when she made that utterance.

At this stage of the investigation, Troopers have determined that the child was secured in a car seat, but the car seat was not secured to the vehicle.

All northbound and southbound lanes of US 69 in Hillister were closed for approximately two (2) hours, but have since reopened.
