He also completed his internship and residency in surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina and a year of research in cancer genetics at the Hollings Cancer Center. In his final year of surgical residency, Dr. Blum served as the Administrative Chief General Surgery Resident. He went on to complete three additional years of training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Tulane University where he also served as Administrative Chief Resident.

As a resident, Dr. Blum was a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and American College of Surgeons. He has presented numerous papers and lectures at seminars, national conferences, and in academic settings; and he has published numerous journal articles and abstracts.
