BISD board of managers adopts a budget and temporarily gives superintendent sole authority to hire teachers

Tuesday night, the Beaumont Independent School District's board of managers unanimously voted to grant superintendent Vern Butler sole authority to hire teachers, at least for 45 days.

The temporary  policy change quickens the hiring process at a time when BISD has a shortage of teachers.

The school year started with 53 budgeted vacancies, and on Tuesday, the board approved hiring three teachers.

A couple of the board managers expressed concern that giving the superintendent full hiring authority could set a negative precedent.

So they compromised and agreed to give him that authority for just a month-and-a-half, but Butler believes superintendents should have it permanently when it comes to hiring teachers.

Butler told 12News, "I believe this helps any district by having this responsibility at the superintendent's level." Butler says he understands positions of principals and higher should go before the board.

Also on Tuesday, the board adopted a budget with $135 million in expenses for this upcoming school year, that's millions of dollars less than previous years.

BISD is expecting $145 million in revenue, leaving the district with about a $10 million surplus.
