BISD won't have enough teachers to start the school year

The Beaumont Independent School District will not have enough teachers for the start of the school year. Superintendent Vern Butler confirmed that to the media after a budget workshop Thursday afternoon.

The lack of teachers is based on a risk the board of managers took last week not to fill 53 teacher vacancies, for budgetary reasons.

As a contingency plan, the managers will vote next Tuesday on giving Butler hiring authority, allowing him to hire certified teachers without board approval.

The board will also adopt a budget for next school year next Tuesday. The budget will most likely consist of up to $138 million in spending.

Board managers on Thursday expressed frustration with the district's financial team. They feel they still have not the hard numbers they need to make the tough decisions.

The board made cuts in travel, field trip costs and school lunches, but the managers postponed making a decision on whether to eliminate the head-start program until next year.

The managers, however, do want to save the Cradles and Cribs program, which is a daycare service for the children of students.

However, that program is currently suspended, because of water and mold damage to the facility.

So it will not be available at the start of school, since school officials have to relocate it.
