20 Cents from Every Bag of Ice Purchased Will Be Donated to ALS Association Now Through Labor Day
FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Aug. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Cumberland Farms, leading convenience and gasoline retailer, today announced that the company will be donating 20 cents from every bag of ice purchased to the ALS Association from now through Labor Day. The company is nominating its customers to #StrikeOutALS by purchasing ice to take part in the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness and funds for the ALS Association. All of the brand's nearly 600 stores will be participating in the fundraiser.
"Many of our employees here at Cumberland Farms have taken the Ice Bucket Challenge, and one store employee challenged us to make a donation in his Facebook video," said Ari Haseotes, CEO of Cumberland Gulf Group. "We have accepted his challenge and will be making a donation for each bag of ice purchased through September 1st. We're so proud of the way our employees and the communities we serve have come together to raise awareness and funds for this cause – and we hope to keep the momentum going."
Originated by Massachusetts's resident and former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates who was diagnosed with ALS in 2012, the Ice Bucket Challenge was created to raise awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease. According to the ALS Association, it has welcomed more than 70,000 new donors to the cause had raised over $4 million in donations as of August 12th.
Want to take the challenge? Here's how it works. Fill up a bucket of water and get your camera ready. Let all of your social followers know about ALS and the cause before adding ice to your bucket and dumping it over your head. Then, nominate a few friends who have 24 hours to complete the challenge. If they opt out, they donate $100 to the ALS Foundation. Then, upload your video to Facebook with your friends tagged and the hashtags #StrikeOutALS and #IceBucketChallenge.
