UPDATE: I-10 reopened after acid spill shut down stretch of highway for nearly 8 hours

BEAUMONT - A stretch of Interstate 10 Eastbound in Beaumont was reopened early Friday morning after an acid spill shut down part of the highway for nearly 8 hours.

Traffic began flowing just before 1 a.m. Friday.

The accident involving two 18-wheelers and a 4-door passenger car happened just after 5 p.m. Thursday, during rush hour.

Beaumont Fire Captain Brad Penisson said one of the tanker trucks carrying acid was "compromised".  Penisson said some of the acid did leak, but the small spill was contained along with fuel and other liquids from the truck.

Environmental workers started transferring the acid from the damaged tanker into an environmental truck around 9:15 p.m. Thursday.

Two people in the Suburban suffered minor injuries.
