BISD facing up to $20,000,000 deficit by end of next school year

The Beaumont Independent School District will have a $15 million to $20 million deficit by the end of the next school year if spending continues according to a BISD financial consultant. The grim financial outlook was presented to members of the district's board of managers Tuesday afternoon during a budget workshop.

Consultant Bill Lenhart said enrollment is not the problem, but daily average attendance, which determines state funding, is an issue.

Lenhart said that departments within the district did not know what was in their individual budgets, and noted that the budget the past few years has been 'unrealistic.'

Members of the board of managers were surprised that no one has been held accountable and that there have been no consequences for overspending.

BISD Superintendent Vernon Butler said the district will have a major initiative to get students to class this school year.

12News' Angel San Juan is covering the meeting and will have a full report tonight on 12News at 10 p.m.
