SAN ANTONIO - Is it August already?! The new school year is fast approaching, and Wallet Hub is starting it off by releasing its 2014 list of states with the best and worst school systems.

New Jersey was in first place, followed by Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Kansas.

Although Texas wasn't in the top 10, it did come in at number 12 overall with a few notable mentions.

The Lone Star state tied with Vermont and Wisconsin for lowest dropout rate, behind Iowa. Texas also fifth for education output and safety, and 24th for school system quality.

The three states with the worst school systems were Louisiana at 48, Alabama at 49 and Mississippi at 50. Only the District of Columbia was worse that Mississippi, coming in at number 51.

According to Wallet Hub, the District of Columbia’s dropout rate is four times higher than Iowa’s.
And the percentage of children between the ages of 6 and 17 who repeated one or more grades since starting kindergarten is almost 8 times higher in Louisiana than in Iowa, Utah or Minnesota.
