Judge denies change of venue in Baby Faith case

Posted:
A woman charged with abusing her newborn child was in court Friday morning seeking a change of venue.  The judge has denied her request.

Christine Johnson will go to trial September 29.  She is charged with first degree felony injury to a child in a case 12News first learned about in August 2013.  Faith Mason, who was one-month-old at the time, suffered 19 fractures including a broken neck, arms and legs.

Johnson is represented in court by defense attorney Ryan Matuska.

The defense presented media reports to show the amount of publicity the case has received.  He said there have been about 220 television news stories about the case and said they reflect negatively on Johnson.

Johnson's mother, LaTonya Johnson, 34, took the stand.  She said her daughter is not guilty and all of the publicity has hurt her daughter's case.

The prosecutor said most of the media coverage on the case has been about the heroism of Baby Faith's recovery and not about her mom.

Baby Faith spent months in a Houston hospital in a body cast. Doctors did not believe that she would overcome her injuries because she also suffered brain trauma. Doctors were appalled at the injuries saying it was the worst case of child abuse they had ever seen.

Baby Faith's father, Darrell Mason, is charged with second degree felony injury to a child by omission; meaning he knew about the abuse and didn't force it to stop.  His trial is set for October 6, also in Judge Stevens' courtroom.

Johnson and Mason lost parental rights in October 2013.
