UPDATE: James Arceneaux sentenced to 30 years in prison for aggravated sexual assault of a 6-year-old

Posted:
A Jefferson County jury Thursday returned a guilty verdict in the trial of a man accused of aggravated sexual assault of a child.

James Arceneaux, 53, was convicted of assaulting a 6-year-old victim.  On Friday Arceneaux was sentenced to 30 years in prison.  Additionally, should he ever be paroled, he must register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.

Arceneaux must serve at least half of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.

Following formal sentencing by Judge Stevens, Assistant District Attorney Bobby Ortego said “The jury sent a strong message to child molesters that their conduct will not be tolerated, and they will be held accountable.”

Prosecutors say the assault happened June 2013 at a home in the 1500 block of 5th Street.

Closing arguments began Thursday morning.  Deliberations began around 10:15 a.m.

Defense attorney Audwin Samuel argued that the child had too many stories and that they did not match up, calling the claims "outlandish allegations" and "credibility questioned."  He told jurors that nurses found no injuries on the child during an exam.

Prosecutor Bobby Ortego argued back that vaginal tissue heals quickly, after 15 days, and that the girl tested after that time period.

The defendant did not take the stand during the trial.  The victim, now 7, did testify.
