Driver taken to hospital after 18-wheeler overturns, spills forklifts

An 18-wheeler carrying forklifts overturned on Cardinal Drive Wednesday morning.

The accident happened near the intersection with MLK in front of the Humane Society of Southeast Texas around 11 a.m.

A policeman on the scene said the 18-wheeler was heading north on Cardinal Drive.  The driver lost control of the truck.  The officer did not know why the driver lost control of the truck.  The big rig struck the cable barrier in the center.  The truck then lost its load of forklifts causing the 18-wheeler to flip.

The driver was taken to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth.  The officer on the scene did not know the extent of the driver's injuries.

Cardinal Drive was closed until 1:30 p.m. as crews worked to clear the scene.
