Retirements and resignations reducing number of BISD layoffs

Posted:
BEAUMONT - What appears to be one of the toughest challenges facing the Beaumont Independent School District's new leadership might be almost resolved by the time the board of managers is sworn in.

The Texas Education Agency's Conservator over BISD, Fred Shafer, said he wants to make sure the managers will not be loaded down with agenda items at Monday's first meeting.

The managers will only have a month to adopt next year's budget.  But the pressure of laying teachers off will not be as heavy, because positions have become available.

According to BISD's personnel department, there are 94 teachers on the proposed layoff list, but 55 vacancies with the possibility of more spots becoming open.

Shafer said, "With these resignations and retirements, they've opened up more vacancies for teachers who are on the RIF (Reduction in Force) list, greater opportunity for them to find employment."

Since the outgoing board in essence voted not to take acton on the RIF list, those teachers filling vacancies are still on contract.  However, they must also be certified.

Shafer seemed more confident about the district's future then he did just a couple of weeks ago.  Shafer said, "We're going to be fine, there's going to be money to pay the teachers."

As for BISD superintendent, Timothy Chargois, Ed.D, his truck was at work Tuesday, but he did not return our request for comment on the state takeover as his days on the job come to an end.

Shafer said, "He's still a superintendent up until Monday, when the new board and superintendent come on board."
