Orange County precinct looks to legalize sale of alcohol

Posted: Updated:
ORANGE COUNTY - Walking into a gas station in Orange County Precinct 2 you may find it difficult to buy beer, or any alcohol for that matter.

Precinct 2, which covers the northern center of the county (Mauriceville) and has about 12,000 residents, is a dry precinct. But that could change.

Sources say the owners of Crawdad's convenience store on Highway 62 are trying to change the law to allow the sale of alcohol inside the precinct.

The owners were not available for comment Tuesday, but two petitions have been circulating around the precinct. One calls for the legal sale of beer and wine, the other, all alcoholic beverages. The Orange County Elections Office received the petitions the week of July 7. The elections administrator says both have enough signatures, but the signatures still need to be verified, which could take weeks. Once verified, the initiative would be placed on the November 4 ballot for voters to decide.
If Precinct 2 does become a wet precinct, it's possible that in the future alcohol could be served at The Orange County Convention and Expo Center, which is located on FM 1442 inside Precinct 2.

Precinct 2 County Commissioner Owen Burton says he's concerned about how liable the county would be if someone is served too much alcohol at the Expo Center. One source tells 12News the county likely wouldn't be liable at all. Burton says it's a discussion that will take place at a later date.
