BISD loses TEA takeover appeal; board of managers to replace elected officials

Posted:
A spokesperson for the Texas Education Agency has informed 12News that the TEA has denied the Beaumont Independence School District's appeal of proposal to replace trustees with a board of managers and removal of the school board will take place.

"A decision has been issued by Deputy Commissioner Michael Berry in the July 10, 2014 Beaumont ISD Record Review.  Mr. Berry has upheld the commissioner's actions and a board of managers will be installed in the Beaumont ISD," said TEA spokesperson DeEtta Culbertson by email.

Shortly after Monday's ruling was announced, Commissioner Williams appointed a board of managers and new superintendent to replace the school board.  CLICK HERE to see who is on the Board of Managers.

A hearing was held July 10 in which BISD officials were back in Austin fighting to hold on to power.  They had hoped to persuade a TEA hearing officer to overrule a proposed state takeover that Commissioner of Education Michael Williams ordered in April.  Monday, the TEA announced that district officials  third and final attempt to stay in power had failed.

School officials lost two previous appeals.  BISD had a record review last month, contesting the Texas Education Agency’s lowering of the district’s accreditation.  The hearing officer ruled against the district.

District officials then tried to stop Commissioner Williams from replacing the elected Board of Trustees with an appointed Board of Managers by taking Commissioner Williams to court.  The judge ruled against BISD.
