Child rescued after being locked inside safe

BEAUMONT - A 4-year-old child is safe after his rescue from being locked inside a safe at a Beaumont business Friday afternoon.

Firefighters with Beaumont Fire-Rescue were called around 12:40 p.m. to a report of a child locked in a safe at La Morenita Meat Market located at 850 S. 11th Street.  When they arrived, they asked patrons to leave the store.

Beaumont Fire Captain Earl White said the child, who is the son of store owners Raul and Rosario Aviles,  was playing in a storeroom and accidentally locked himself inside the safe.

Mrs. Aviles said her two boys, ages five and four, had been playing hide-and-seek, when the oldest locked the youngest in the safe which measured just three feet by three feet.

Mr. Aviles said the combination lock broke when he tried to open the safe.  He called for help when he could not open the safe with a crowbar.

Firefighters used a special saw to cut the hinges of the door and then used the "Jaws of Life" to pry the door open. It took firefighters approximately 30 minutes to free the child from the safe.

The child was checked by Beaumont EMS and found to be okay following his brief ordeal.

A spokesperson for the Beaumont Police Department said it is believed to be an accident, but detectives are still investigating how he was able to get into the safe.
