Game of Thrones, Fargo top Emmy nominations

Updated:

By Joyce Eng,

Game of Thrones topped Thursday's Primetime Emmy nominations with 19, followed by Fargo with 18 and American Horror Story: Coven with 17.

Thrones will duke it out for drama series against reigning champ Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey,  House of Cards, four-time champ Mad Men and True Detective.

Look back at last year's Emmys

True Detective, which opted to enter the drama race instead of miniseries, became the first show in 12 years to nab double nods in the lead actor category. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson will go up against three-time champ Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), reigning champ Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom), Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Kevin Spacey (House of Cards). Hamm, who's currently tied with Martin Sheen, Hugh Laurie and Michael C. Hall, would become the category's biggest loser (0-7) if he loses.

In comedy, Modern Family will try to duplicate Frasier's five-peat in the series race. It's up against The Big Bang TheoryLouieOrange Is the New BlackSilicon Valley and Veep

The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Seth Meyers, will air Monday, Aug. 25 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC.
