Chikugunya virus risk low in SETX despite influx of mosquitoes

Posted:
A recent rise in the mosquito population in Jefferson County is being attributed to recent rainfall. A spokesperson for the county's Mosquito Control department said the workers there have received an influx of calls from residents about the pesky bugs.

This comes as Texas Health Officials are confirming the first case of Chikungunya in Central Texas, a mosquito transmitted virus that can cause severe joint paint.

But the spokesperson said said the risk of getting the virus in Southeast Texas is low. Like West Nile, the Chikungunya virus is found in mosquitoes that live in environments that require the county to spray underground.

"With the rains we got last week the eggs are just starting to hatch. We're getting calls from Sabine Pass, Pleasure Island, Port Arthur and Port Neches. So those are the mosquitos we are dealing with right now," Mosquito Control Director Kevin Sexton said.

Earlier this week the county began spraying in Mid-County and Southern Jefferson County where most mosquitoes are being found. A majority of the mosquitoes out now do not carry viruses.
