Charges against former BISD employee dropped, legal woes not necessarily over

Posted:
Theft charges against a former Beaumont Independent School District maintenance worker and his wife have been dropped, according to information from the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office.  The turn of events does not necessarily mean the accused will remain free from prosecution.

Daryl Glenn Johnson and his wife Erin Johnson were indicted in 2012 on one count of felony theft each, after school district officials said they stole more than $270,000 as part of a bogus time card scheme to receive pay for work that was never done for the district.

According to 12News file stories, the district became suspicious when Johnson's wife, Erin Johnson, and a friend, Kailyn Deshondra Pete, each received a large amount of overtime pay.

The District Attorney indicated that the two are not out of the woods legally.  Although the charges coming from the DA's office have been dropped, another agency is investigating the accusations.

"As we discussed when the task force was first announced, one benefit of a team approach is to identify which cases are best for federal prosecution and which cases are best for state prosecution so that resources are not duplicated.  There may even be cases which result in dual prosecutions.  I anticipate that in the coming months you will see charges being filed both federally and at the state level after the task force has made that determination," said Jefferson County District Attorney Corey Crenshaw

Charges against Pete have not been dropped.
