Nederland man pleads guilty in mother's shooting death, gets 40 years

A Nederland man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for killing his mother.

The sentence was handed down to Joseph Garrett Arredondo Monday after he entered a guilty plea.

Arredondo was charged with capital murder in the April 2013 shooting death of his mother, Hollie Ann Arredondo, 55, of Nederland.

According to 12News file stories, Joseph Arredondo, who was 26 at the time, kicked in the door of his mother's home in the Hillcrest Apartment Complex located in the 1500 block of S. 27th Street.  Joseph Arredondo fired a .40 caliber pistol multiple times at his mother while she was on the phone with the Spindletop Center.  A police spokesperson at the time told 12News that she was trying to get mental help for her son.

Arredondo was still in the parking lot of the apartment building when police arrived.  They said he had the murder weapon in his pants.
