Women in Beaumont's north end on high alert as wanted sexual predator remains on loose

Posted:
BEAUMONT - Tensions among some are high in Beaumont's north end, especially among women, and especially at the Autumn Cove apartments on Eastex Freeway, where this past Wednesday night police say a man entered one of the apartments, slipping in through a door left cracked open, and sexually assaulted a woman watching TV.

“That's really scary, no woman needs to be by herself at times like that, that's real creepy," said Chasity Bill, who lives at Autumn Cove.

Bill says news of the sexual assault has left her living in fear.

"I was scared to stay home by myself, and I asked my cousin if she could come stay over with me," Bill told 12News Sunday.

Wednesday’s assault was the third and most recent in what police are calling a string of sexual assaults occurring in the city's north end over the past 9 weeks. Police say an armed man appears to be targeting women who are by themselves late at night, particularly in parking lots.

Police believe the same man is behind sexual assaults that occurred earlier this summer at the Ashley Square apartments and Regent Apartments.

“That's creepy, you know, I'm really going to be on guard now, for real," said one resident of Regent Apartments who did not wish to give her name.

Another woman told us she is scared to walk to her car to go to work in the morning because it is still dark out. She told us Sunday morning she carried a fork with her for protection.

Other women aren't so scared.

“I took karate, so if you mess with me, you're going to get hurt, and I’ll call the cops," said another Regent resident who did not want to be identified.

Police do not have a sketch of the suspect yet, but he's been described by all three victims as a dark-skinned black man in his early to mid-20's. He’s also described as thin with a clean-shaven face and big bulging eyes with a wide flat nose.

Police are urging everyone to be aware of their surroundings.

“Be a good neighbor, be a good witness, if you see somebody lurking around in parking lots at some of the apartment complexes, call them in, we want to check it out. We want to solve these cases," said Beaumont PD spokesperson Officer Carol Riley.

Riley said officers are on “heightened alert” and may start showing more of a presence in the north end.
