Sheriff: $2 million in marijuana found in Chambers County

The Chambers County Sheriff Wednesday said a huge marijuana crop discovered Tuesday is estimated at $2 million  in street value.

Sheriff Brian Hawthorne said around 1 p.m. Tuesday a dispatcher got a call from a local rancher who said there was suspicious activity going on at property he leases from the Army Corp of Engineers.  The property is located in west Chambers County on Gou Hole Road near FM 565.

The rancher told deputies that he found a clearing.  When he approached the clearing, two people that appeared to be camping there took off running once they spotted him.

The clearing is not accessible by vehicle and is around ¾ mile from the roadway through thick woods.   When deputies arrived at the area, they said they saw a large amount of marijuana plants. The deputies said they realized the magnitude of the growing operation and requested additional assistance.

The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Department of Public Safety Special Crime Unit and the DPS-Air Wing Unit,  collected approximately 5,500 plants.  The plants were in different stages of growth from seedlings to mature plants.

Sheriff Hawthorn said the camp and the marijuana growing operation appeared to have been ongoing for "some time."

As of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, no arrests have been announced.
